Udta Teer Day 6 Box Office: Ayushmann Khurrana’s Spy Comedy Nears Rs 50 Crore Worldwide Despite Weekday Dip
Ayushmann Khurrana’s spy comedy Udta Teer has held up reasonably well through its first week, but the weekday trend is now working against it. According to Pinkvilla, citing Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 2.50 crore nett in India on its first Wednesday, October 28, a drop of around 15 per cent from an already low Tuesday — and that came despite a buy-one-get-one ticket offer on Tuesday. The six-day India nett total now stands at Rs 27.50 crore, and the film is expected to close its first week at around Rs 30 crore.
Worldwide, the picture looks a little brighter. CinemaExpress, citing Sacnilk figures carried by NDTV, reports the film’s worldwide gross at Rs 42.68 crore after six days, with overseas markets contributing around Rs 8.5 crore. On Thursday, Udta Teer is also set to cross the domestic nett figures of Chand Mera Dil, and with no big Hindi release arriving this week, it has a clear run until Ramayana reaches cinemas on November 5. Trade estimates suggest the film could touch Rs 50 crore nett in India by the time that run ends, though Pinkvilla’s own projection is more cautious, putting the likely lifetime finish between Rs 35 crore and Rs 40 crore nett — which would leave it behind Khurrana’s last release, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, which collected Rs 51 crore nett in India.
Udta Teer, written and directed by Aakash Kaushik and produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, stars Khurrana alongside Sara Ali Khan, with Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor and Gulshan Grover among the ensemble. Its premise — an amnesiac Pakistani spy who wakes up believing he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer — gave it one of the year’s more distinctive hooks, and reviews noted its satirical edge.
Here is the Filmverse take: Udta Teer is living the classic fate of the well-liked but soft-opening comedy — good enough to hold, not strong enough to grow. The weekday dip after a buy-one-get-one offer is the worrying detail, because discount-driven Tuesdays usually flatter the next day’s hold, not weaken it. Still, the film’s real test is not this week but next: Ramayana’s arrival on November 5 will swallow screens whole — see our report on Ramayana’s advance booking crossing Rs 14.84 crore. If Udta Teer can bank a Rs 50 crore worldwide gross before then, it will have earned a respectable, if unspectacular, run — proof that Khurrana’s brand of middle-of-the-road satire still finds an audience, even when it cannot open one.
