James Gunn Confirms No Man of Tomorrow Trailer Until 2027, Shutting Down December Reveal Rumours
James Gunn has shut down the latest Man of Tomorrow trailer rumour himself. The writer-director confirmed on Threads on October 30 that there will be no trailer for his Superman sequel before the end of the year, denying a fan report that the first footage would debut in mid-December attached to Dune: Part Three. “Expected by whom???” Gunn wrote, adding, “More like James not wanting people to be disappointed when there’s no trailer in December,” according to ComingSoon.net and Dark Horizons, which covered the exchange on Thursday and Friday.
The rumour had a logical hook. Warner Bros.’ own Dune: Part Three opens on December 18, 2026 — the same day as Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday — and studios routinely attach a tentpole’s first trailer to another studio’s biggest holiday release. Gunn’s own Superman playbook fed the expectation too: its first trailer dropped in December 2024, seven months before the film’s July 2025 release. Man of Tomorrow, which wrapped filming in late August 2026, is scheduled for July 9, 2027, so a December reveal looked plausible on that timeline — until Gunn ruled it out.
This is the third Man of Tomorrow rumour Gunn has personally shot down since September, after dismissing claims about secret characters appearing in the film and a separate report tying the sequel to Batman and Supergirl casting. The sequel brings David Corenswet back as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, teaming up against Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger in the android villain’s live-action debut. Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced and Aaron Pierre also return or join the cast.
Gunn has not given a new target date for the first trailer, only ruling out 2026. There is, to be clear, no Man of Tomorrow trailer to watch yet, which is precisely why Gunn’s denial became news on its own.
Here is the Filmverse take: Gunn’s bluntness is doing DC Studios a favour, even if fans are disappointed. Trailer speculation has become its own news cycle, and a December date that was never real would only have produced a backlash when it passed. By killing the rumour early, Gunn protects the actual reveal — whenever it lands in 2027 — and keeps the focus on the film’s real selling point, a Superman-Lex Luthor team-up against Brainiac. For a sequel still eight months from release, patience is the smarter marketing strategy than a rushed teaser.
