Avengers: Doomsday vs Dune: Part Three: December’s $400 Million Box-Office Showdown Begins
Hollywood is heading for one of the biggest box-office collisions in years. Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three both arrive in theatres on December 18, 2026 — Doomsday a day early in India, on December 17 — and the advance numbers suggest neither is willing to blink.
Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is tracking a domestic opening weekend of $300–400 million, according to trade projections, with more than $125 million in global presales already banked and over $50 million in domestic advance sales, more than 70 per cent of it for premium large-format screens. The film unites the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and Marvel’s latest TV spot — featuring three Captain Americas in one joke — landed over the World Series weekend.
Dune: Part Three, which concludes Villeneuve’s trilogy, is tracking a domestic opening above $100 million, which would be a franchise record. Warner Bros. Pictures released the film’s final trailer on October 27, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides now ruling as a ruthless Emperor and Robert Pattinson joining as the villainous Scytale. The film has been made for IMAX, and trade reports note it has edged Doomsday out of some premium-format screens — the real battleground in a same-day clash.
The numbers frame the stakes: Doomsday’s projected opening is roughly three to four times Dune’s, but Dune’s audience is the one that books IMAX weeks ahead, and premium screens cannot serve both films at once. The clash also caps a year in which the global box office is forecast to reach $35.7 billion, its best since 2019. Here is the Filmverse take: same-day clashes usually end with one film moving, but this one probably won’t — both are event films with distinct audiences, and both studios would rather fight for screens than surrender the Christmas corridor. The winner may simply be whichever film earns the second weekend.
