‘I Will Make Kaante 2’: Sanjay Dutt Vows to Fulfil Sanjay Gupta’s Dream in Emotional Tribute
Sanjay Dutt has promised to make Kaante 2 in memory of filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, who passed away on October 30 after a fall at his Mumbai residence. In an emotional tribute shared on social media on October 31, Dutt called Gupta his brother and revealed that the two had recently discussed the sequel to their 2002 crime drama Kaante.
“Gupts, my brother. I still cannot believe that you are gone. We have shared so much together, so many memories and so many years of friendship. You have always been family to me, and that will never change. I will miss you, our conversations and all the times we spent together. We were just discussing Kaante 2 recently, I will make Kaante 2 your dream, in memory of you my brother, I will do everything for this dream of yours to come true, love you forever and always. Life will not be the same without you, brother. May God bless your soul,” Dutt wrote, alongside throwback photographs of the two together, including one celebration picture with Amitabh Bachchan standing beside them.
Gupta was laid to rest in Mumbai on Saturday, October 31, with final rites at the Pawan Hans crematorium attended by Abhishek Bachchan, Rakesh Roshan and Manoj Bajpayee, among others. Tributes poured in through the day: Kajol wrote that the news was “heartbreaking”, Raveena Tandon said she was “really really saddened”, and Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, Hansal Mehta, Arjun Kapoor, Sonu Sood and Tusshar Kapoor also paid their respects. Dutt and Gupta’s partnership stretched back three decades, from Gupta’s directorial debut Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994) through Khauff, Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006), to the Gupta-produced Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007).
Here is the Filmverse take: a sequel vow made in grief is not a production announcement, and fans should read it as a promise rather than a plan. But Dutt saying it publicly, in the hours after the funeral, puts Kaante 2 on the industry’s agenda in a way no trade announcement could. The original — an ensemble crime drama starring Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav — remains Gupta’s most quoted film, and its world of honour among thieves is one audiences have never stopped asking to revisit. Whether the promise becomes a script will be the real tribute. Read our report on Gupta’s passing here: https://filmverse.in/filmmaker-sanjay-gupta-passes-away-57-kaante-shootout-wadala/
