How Dhurandhar The Revenge’s Rs 1,000 Crore Run Paid for a Cinema Makeover Across India

When Dhurandhar The Revenge collected more than Rs 1,000 crore in India earlier this year, the headlines were all about Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar. The quieter story, reported by Bollywood Hungama this week, is what that money did next: it paid to rebuild the cinemas themselves.

A trade source told the publication that the spy-action sequel was a one-of-a-kind blockbuster, with ticket prices hiked considerably and audiences flocking to theatres in every part of the country anyway. The cash flow that followed gave exhibitors the confidence — and the funds — to renovate and upgrade, with many theatres undertaking the work through July and August. Some reopened in time for Ramayana this Diwali, while a few more are expected to resume operations in the coming weeks.

Mumbai has seen the biggest wave of upgrades. Several theatres, including Roxy, SunCity, Jai Hind in Lalbaug and Topiwala, temporarily shut their doors to undergo renovation, while MovieTime Hub in Goregaon and MovieTime in Malad upgraded all their screens to laser projection, promising sharper and brighter images. South Mumbai’s New Excelsior is also expected to go for an upgrade, according to trade circles.

The technology on display is genuinely new. MovieMax in Andheri East upgraded to 2K projection, enabling the property to screen 3D films as well as Hollywood releases — and Ramayana became the first 3D film screened there. SunCity has gone further still, installing a Magnova LED screen, a premium large-format cinema display system from UFO Cinema Solutions that made its Indian debut at Magic Framez in Kochi in August. SunCity is believed to be only the second cinema hall in the country to adopt the system.

The upgrade drive is not limited to independent theatres. On November 6, Mid-Day reported that PVR Inox Cinemas had upgraded as many as 150 screens across the country with 3D technology to accommodate additional 3D shows of Ramayana, a move that ties the Dhurandhar windfall directly to this weekend’s biggest release. The trade source was careful to put the story in perspective, noting that Dhurandhar The Revenge was not the only reason theatres renovated — but it definitely played a huge role, and 2026 has seen a record number of cinemas revamped. That matters because the theatrical business lives or dies on the experience it offers against the sofa at home.
