Ramayana North America Box Office: $2.80 Million USA Opening Day, No. 1 Film in America
Ramayana: Part 1 has turned record North American pre-sales into a record opening day overseas. Pinkvilla reports the film grossed $5.45 million (about Rs 51.50 crore) internationally, with the United States contributing $2.80 million (about Rs 26.5 crore) — the second-biggest opening day ever for a Bollywood film in the USA, just behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge at $2.91 million. It was the No. 1 film at the US box office on Thursday. All figures are trade estimates, not producer figures.
That splits into nearly $2 million from Wednesday’s North America previews and $3.50 million from Thursday’s shows overseas. Territory-wise: Canada $550,000, the UK $590,000, Germany $190,000, Australia $350,000, the Middle East $400,000. Combined with Rs 76 crore gross in India, the worldwide opening day stands at about Rs 127.50 crore.
The standout was the United Kingdom, where Ramayana set a new all-time Bollywood opening day record with £440,000, passing Dhurandhar 2’s £427,000 — helped by strong dubbed-version business. Germany also registered the biggest opening day ever for a Bollywood release at €165,000, while Australia delivered the fourth-biggest Bollywood opening day at AUD 505,000 and Canada posted a healthy CAD 775,000. The soft spot was the Middle East at $400,000, with no Saudi Arabia or Qatar release and a low UAE turnout. The film now heads into its four-day extended opening weekend on course for more than $20 million overseas, per Pinkvilla — though Sony’s heavy prints-and-advertising spend means the film probably needed a breakout beyond the diaspora to clear its bar, and that has not happened yet. What matters now is the lifetime total, and the early signs favour it: audience scores are positive and weekend advances are strong. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, and plays in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with IMAX as a primary platform.
Here is the Filmverse take: the USA figure is the headline, but the UK record is the more telling number — a market where Ramayana beat Dhurandhar 2 outright, with dubbed versions doing real business, suggests this epic is travelling beyond the core diaspora audience in Britain in a way it has not yet in America. The Middle East is the caution: a $400,000 day in a reliable Bollywood stronghold shows the film’s appeal is not uniform. Even so, a $20 million-plus overseas weekend would rank among the biggest Indian openings ever abroad.
