Maatrubhumi: Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh Exit Salman Khan’s Galwan Film as Trailer Arrives Today

Defence journalists Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh have announced that their formal association with Salman Khan’s upcoming film Maatrubhumi has come to an end. In a joint statement released on November 5, the co-authors of the India’s Most Fearless series said the film has evolved beyond the account of the 2020 Galwan Valley clash featured in their work. “Our association with Maatrubhumi (earlier titled Battle of Galwan) has come to a close,” the statement read, “as the film has evolved, it has moved beyond the account of the Galwan incident in our India’s Most Fearless series that first brought us on board.”

The two journalists thanked Salman Khan, director Apoorva Lakhia and the team for the opportunity, adding that they hold them in the highest regard and wish them the very best as they bring their vision to the screen. Their association began with a chapter in India’s Most Fearless 3, published in 2022, documenting the June 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. Lakhia acquired the rights to the chapter in 2023, and Aroor was also credited for the film’s story alongside Suresh Nair.

The film is based on the deadly hand-to-hand confrontation in which Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, portrayed by Salman Khan, and 19 other Indian soldiers lost their lives. The announcement comes as the film prepares for its next promotional phase: its four-minute-and-43-second trailer received a U/A 16+ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification on November 4 and is expected to be unveiled today, November 6. The release date remains unconfirmed, with November 20 and December 11 reportedly under consideration.

There was a second Salman Khan headline the same day: Bollywood Hungama reported that the star has returned to playback singing after 11 years with “Teri Sexy Beauty”, a track from Maatrubhumi. The song gives the film’s music campaign its own talking point ahead of the trailer launch.

Here is the Filmverse take: a public, gracious parting the day before a trailer launch is unusual, and it does something useful for the film — it draws a clean line between the book’s account and the film’s dramatisation. Aroor and Singh have protected their journalism while wishing the film well, and the film now gets judged on its own terms. The trailer, when it lands today, will be watched with that framing in mind — and with a 4-minute-43-second runtime, it has room to show whether Lakhia’s vision earns the scale of the story.
