Ramayana North America Box Office: Premiere Pre-Sales Cross $1 Million in USA and Canada Ahead of November 5 Release

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part One has crossed $1 million in North American premiere pre-sales before a single public show has played. Tickets for the Wednesday premiere shows in the United States and Canada had sold about $1.07 million by Saturday, according to Sacnilk, with the US share alone at $944,863 from 43,666 tickets across 860 locations. Premiere shows begin Wednesday, November 4, ahead of the November 5 worldwide release, three days before Diwali. All figures are trade estimates, not producer figures.

Ramayana’s momentum has been building since its Academy Museum premiere in Los Angeles on October 27, where Tiwari, Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi joined producer Namit Malhotra for a screening the makers said was oversubscribed. Sacnilk reported US premiere sales jumping 27 per cent in a day after that screening, from $631,000 to $800,000, before passing $1 million.

The wider overseas picture is even bigger. Sacnilk put overseas pre-sales across all dates at about $3.5 million on Saturday, with Middle East bookings not yet opened. Pinkvilla’s breakdown of opening-weekend sales as of Thursday put the US at $1.8 million and Canada at $350,000, with Australia at $260,000, Britain at $165,000 and Germany at $110,000. Pinkvilla called the film poised for an opening weekend of $20 million-plus overseas. In the US it trails Dhurandhar: The Revenge by 15 to 20 per cent, but leads it in California and Illinois; Australia and Canada rank second only to that film among Hindi releases.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, with Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. It is directed by Tiwari, produced by Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, distributed overseas by Sony Pictures, and features music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. It releases in Hindi, English, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam, in IMAX and premium formats, with a PG-13 rating in North America.

Here is the Filmverse take: for diaspora audiences, pre-sales are the earliest honest verdict a film gets — nobody books a premiere ticket for a three-hour-15-minute epic on opening week unless they already trust it. Crossing $1 million in premiere sales alone, with the Middle East still to open, tells exhibitors what to do with screens, and the Wednesday premiere will be an event, not just a screening. If the $20 million-plus overseas opening-weekend projection holds, it will rank among the biggest Indian openings ever outside India.
