PVR INOX Posts Record Q2 as Indian Box Office Crosses Rs 4,000 Crore in a Quarter for the First Time

PVR INOX has reported its best quarter ever, as India’s theatrical market crossed a milestone no one had reached before. For the July-September quarter of FY27, the multiplex chain recorded revenue of Rs 2,133 crore, up 17 per cent from Rs 1,819 crore a year earlier, with adjusted EBITDA rising 44 per cent to Rs 475.2 crore and profit after tax from continuing operations jumping 111 per cent to Rs 273.3 crore. Managing Director Ajay Bijli called it a landmark quarter for Indian cinema and for the company, pointing to strong content, higher consumer spending and disciplined costs.

The wider market figures are even more striking. According to Ormax Media and company estimates cited by PVR INOX, India’s gross box office collections reached Rs 4,443 crore in Q2 FY27, up 23 per cent year on year — the first time the Indian box office has crossed Rs 4,000 crore in a single quarter. First-half collections stood at Rs 7,618 crore, up 22 per cent. English-language films were the fastest-growing segment, collecting Rs 1,024 crore, up 87 per cent, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossing Rs 608 crore to become the highest-grossing English film in India, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey collecting Rs 233 crore. Hindi box office, including dubbed films, grew 12 per cent, with Hanuman Ansh at Rs 351 crore and Mirzapur: The Movie at Rs 267 crore.

Inside PVR INOX’s own numbers, growth came more from spending than footfalls: 46.3 million patrons, up just 4 per cent, while average ticket price rose 14 per cent to Rs 298 and food spend per head also rose 14 per cent to Rs 153. The company completed its first Rs 300 crore share buyback in September, ended net cash positive, and runs 1,797 screens across 114 cities.

Here is the Filmverse take: this is a record quarter that flatters the industry and quietly warns it. A Rs 4,443 crore quarter proves the theatrical habit is premium-priced — audiences pay more per visit, but visit only slightly more often, so growth rests on pricing power and event films rather than a broadening audience. That works when the slate delivers, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey did, but leaves exhibitors exposed if a quarter goes soft. The next test is the pipeline PVR INOX flagged, including Ramayana: Part One in November — see our report on Ramayana’s advance booking crossing Rs 14.84 crore — and whether the audience that paid Rs 298 a ticket keeps returning when event films stop arriving.
