Scene Day 1 Box Office: Suriya’s Diwali Entertainer Opens at Rs 19.15 Crore Net, Tops Mookuthi Amman 2

Suriya’s Diwali release has opened on a strong note. Scene, the Tamil action-comedy directed by Jithu Madhavan, collected Rs 19.15 crore net in India on its first day, Friday, November 6, according to Sacnilk’s final Day 1 figures — with a worldwide gross of Rs 34.25 crore.

The split shows where the film’s strength lies. The Tamil version contributed Rs 16.15 crore net from 4,878 shows, while the Telugu version added Rs 3 crore from 1,289 shows, taking the India gross to Rs 22.25 crore. Overseas added Rs 12 crore. Across 6,167 shows, the film ran at around 55 per cent occupancy and sold an estimated 14.3 lakh tickets. All figures are trade estimates.

The opening was powered by pre-sales. Scene sold 6.41 lakh tickets before the first show and grossed Rs 11.04 crore through Day 1 advance bookings alone — Suriya’s highest Day 1 pre-sales ever, passing Kanguva’s Rs 10.16 crore. Tamil Nadu accounted for Rs 9.6 crore of the first-day advance sales, a reminder of how firmly the star’s home base turned out for him.

Scene also won its Diwali clash: Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2, released the same day, collected just Rs 41 lakh net on Day 1 from 640 shows. For now the race is not close.

Early response has been largely positive. Viewers have praised Suriya’s relaxed, comic turn as DSP Inbaraj, the film’s quirky tone and a crowd-pleasing second half, and early BookMyShow ratings sat high. The criticisms are a slower first half, occasional uneven comedy and a plot that feels convenient in places — but the overall sentiment leans positive, with many calling it a solid Diwali watch.

This is Suriya’s third release of 2026, after Karuppu and Vishwanath & Sons, and a test of a crossover: Jithu Madhavan, the Malayalam filmmaker behind Romancham and Aavesham, making his Tamil debut with a dark crime comedy about an unruly, brilliant cop who resigns from the force. The record advance bookings show the audience was sold before release; the positive first reactions suggest the film is holding up its end. The question now is the weekend — whether Scene can sustain its Diwali run while Ramayana dominates screens nationwide.
