Spider-Man: Brand New Day Powers Sony Pictures to 527% Profit Jump as $2.52 Billion Run Makes Box Office History

Sony Pictures has reported a quarter powered almost entirely by one web-slinger. For the July-to-September quarter, Sony Pictures Entertainment posted revenue of $3.23 billion, up 37 per cent year over year, and net income of $488 million — a 527 per cent surge over the same quarter last year, according to TheWrap. Theatrical revenue reached $1.28 billion, up more than 1,100 per cent, and the engine behind almost all of it was Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The film has now grossed $2.52 billion worldwide, according to trade tracking, with $958.89 million in North America and $1.562 billion internationally. That makes it Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film ever, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time before adjusting for inflation, behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Released in theatres on July 31, 2026, on a reported $225 million production budget, it opened to a $360 million domestic weekend — a record opening — and it was not alone in lifting the quarter: Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has grossed $400 million worldwide, and Insidious: Out of the Further added $171.5 million. Television revenue, by contrast, fell sharply, down 45 per cent to $483 million.

The film’s dominance began before it even opened. Its first official trailer, released on March 18, drew 718.6 million views across platforms in its first 24 hours — the most-watched trailer launch in history, according to Sony, overtaking the previous record of 365 million set by Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. The film has since moved to digital, available to buy or rent from October 6, with the 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD release set for December 15 — three days before Avengers: Doomsday opens on December 18. Here is the Filmverse take: a 527 per cent profit jump on the back of a single film is both a triumph and a warning. Brand New Day proved that the theatrical event film is alive — a $360 million opening weekend and a $2.52 billion total is not a market in decline — but it also showed how concentrated the business has become: one franchise carried Sony’s entire quarter while its television arm shrank. The real test now is whether Sony can turn this into a slate rather than a moment, and whether the film’s momentum carries into December, when the Marvel machine it helped build returns with Avengers: Doomsday.
