Godzilla Minus Zero India Release Locked for November 20 as Ramayana’s IMAX Window Pushes the Monster Back Two Weeks

Godzilla Minus Zero finally has its India release date: the Japanese monster epic will arrive in Indian theatres on Friday, November 20, 2026, two weeks after its North American opening on November 6 and its Japan opening on November 3, Godzilla Day. The date, confirmed by trade reports on Tuesday, November 3, ends weeks of uncertainty over when Indian audiences would see Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One — and the reason for the wait is sitting at the top of India’s box office conversation.

PVR INOX Pictures, which is handling the film’s Indian distribution in collaboration with Toho, moved the film from its expected November 6 India opening to November 20 to avoid a direct clash with Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. The clash was never really about dates; it was about screens. Both films are made for IMAX — Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production ever filmed for IMAX, shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras — and Ramayana reportedly holds a two-week IMAX exclusivity window in India from its November 5 release, leaving almost no premium screens for a competing spectacle. India has only a limited number of IMAX auditoriums, and with Ramayana’s advance bookings crossing Rs 100 crore worldwide, exhibitors had no reason to split those screens.

By moving to November 20, Godzilla arrives just as Ramayana’s IMAX window closes, giving it a fair shot at the big screens instead of the leftovers — though the new date brings its own fight, with Hollywood’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping also scheduled for November 20 and chasing the same premium formats. Godzilla Minus Zero is written and directed by Yamazaki, who returns as director, screenwriter and visual effects supervisor, with a runtime of 135 minutes. The sequel picks up two years after Godzilla Minus One, as Japan struggles to rebuild after the war and Godzilla plunged the country into minus — and just as humanity clings to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes. The 2023 original, made for just $15 million, grossed more than $110 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and the sequel introduces a new three-headed King Ghidorah.

Here is the Filmverse take: this is the clearest measure yet of Ramayana’s gravitational pull — it did not just win its opening weekend, it rearranged another country’s biggest film around itself. For Indian audiences, the delay is actually good news disguised as bad: a Godzilla film squeezed into Ramayana’s IMAX shadow would have played on standard screens, which defeats the entire point of a film shot for IMAX. November 20 gives the monster its own stage, and it sets up one of the month’s most interesting weekends — a Japanese kaiju epic against a Hunger Games prequel, both fighting for the same premium screens Ramayana is about to vacate. The monster may have waited two weeks, but it will arrive on screens big enough for it.
