The Odyssey Crosses $1.8 Billion Worldwide as Christopher Nolan’s Epic Sets All-Time IMAX Record at $555 Million

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office, continuing an extraordinary run that has now passed 100 days in cinemas. The epic, which released on July 17, 2026, has collected $625.5 million in North America, accounting for 34.8 per cent of its worldwide total, with international markets contributing $1.17 billion, or 65.2 per cent. On its 16th weekend it was still adding $2.7 million overseas. All figures are trade estimates.

The headline inside the headline is the format record. The Odyssey has earned $555 million from IMAX screens alone worldwide, making it the first film ever to set an all-time record for IMAX collections. That figure is inseparable from how the film was made: it is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, and it was recently re-released on IMAX screens after briefly losing shows to new releases, with audiences returning for the large-format experience. The film is also Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever, ahead of his previous blockbusters, and it stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.

The run has also been a year-defining one for the wider industry. The Odyssey sits among 2026’s billion-dollar releases alongside Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which leads the year at $2.5 billion worldwide, and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, and it has helped push the global box office towards its best year since 2019. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has now set the film’s home-entertainment release for mid-November, with digital, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions carrying more than 90 minutes of extras including a 12-part behind-the-scenes collection overseen by Nolan.

Here is the Filmverse take: the $1.8 billion total is impressive, but the $555 million IMAX figure is the number that will change how studios think, because it proves audiences will travel, pay a premium and return for a format, not just a film. That lesson lands in India at exactly the right moment: Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, which was filmed for IMAX, releases worldwide on November 5 with IMAX screens as a primary platform, and its advance bookings suggest Indian audiences are ready to make the same format-first choice. Nolan did not just make a hit; he made the case that the biggest screen is still the best argument for going to the cinema at all.
