Udta Teer Opening Weekend: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sara Ali Khan Film Closes First Weekend Near Rs 20 Crore Nett

Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s spy comedy Udta Teer has closed its first weekend on an upward curve, even if the opening itself was modest. The film, directed by Aakash Kaushik and released on October 23, opened at Rs 4.10 crore nett in India, then jumped a striking 76.8 percent on its second day to Rs 7.25 crore nett across 6,164 shows, according to Sacnilk data reported by Filmibeat and Pinkvilla. Early Sunday trends pointed to further growth, with the film passing Rs 5 crore nett during the day and heading toward a first-weekend total of around Rs 19–20 crore nett, per trade estimates.

The shape of the weekend matters more than any single day. A film that nearly doubles on Saturday after a soft Friday is usually a film whose word of mouth is doing the heavy lifting, and Udta Teer fits that pattern: a quirky spy comedy built around a memory-loss twist, with a family-entertainer pitch, it arrived with positive reviews but without the kind of opening-day frenzy that carries a film on hype alone. Its two-day India net total of Rs 11.35 crore, and gross of Rs 13.53 crore, gave it a base to build on, and Sunday’s advance trends suggested audiences kept coming.

The film’s ensemble — Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Suhail Nayyar and Supriya Pilgaonkar alongside the leads — is jointly backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment. It also outperformed Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 in Hindi over the weekend, passing the Tamil blockbuster’s Hindi collections, a small but telling sign of where urban Hindi audiences spent their weekend.

Here is the Filmverse take: Udta Teer is now in the most delicate phase of any mid-sized release — the Monday test. A weekend built on growth rather than opening noise is encouraging, but as Pinkvilla noted, the film’s real challenge is holding steady on weekdays, with Ramayana: Part One arriving on November 5 and only one open week to consolidate in. The encouraging sign for Ayushmann Khurrana, whose post-pandemic box-office run has been uneven despite consistent critical goodwill, is that audiences are discovering this film rather than being dragged to it — and discovered films tend to hold better than hyped ones. If Monday holds anywhere near Sunday, Udta Teer stops being a slow starter and starts being a word-of-mouth success story.
