Kriti Sanon Calls Out Gender Inequality on Kareena Kapoor’s Show: ‘Women Shouldn’t Have to Justify Their Choices’

Kriti Sanon has turned a chat-show appearance into one of the day’s most talked-about Bollywood moments. Appearing on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s talk show What Women Want, the actor spoke about gender inequality, online trolling and scrutiny over clothing choices — and earned emphatic support from her host.

Asked what women really want, Kriti answered plainly: “To not be judged and for people to actually mind their own business.” She recalled her disbelief when a festive-season outfit — a modern choli worn in a rakhi advertisement — became, in her words, “like a six-person panel discussion on prime-time news.” Her response at the time set the tone for the debate: the essence of festivals, she wrote on Instagram, is not in the clothes a woman wears but in the emotions and meaning she holds for the traditions.

Kareena, who hosts the show, praised Kriti for speaking up on a platform built for conversations about women, calling it “a complete inspiration” and telling her guest: “I think it’s very, very brave of you to be a baddie.” Kriti embraced the label, saying she feels strongly about standing up for oneself and about “the gender inequality that exists and patriarchy is so, like, embedded deep that we need to kind of try to shatter it multiple times for it to break.”

She stressed that the issue goes beyond her own experience. Actors, she said, are the easiest targets, but the same policing has happened to multiple women recently, and the abuse that follows is neither fair nor harmless. “We’re also human and it affects us,” she said.

The conversation lands at a busy moment in Kriti’s career. She also revealed this week that her next solo lead is a Maddock Films project she describes as a film “on my shoulders.”

Here is the Filmverse take: what makes this exchange stick is not the celebrity of it but the specificity. Kriti did not speak in generalities about “negativity” — she named the mechanism, a prime-time panel dissecting a blouse, and the double standard underneath it, where a woman’s respect for culture is measured by her neckline rather than her heart. That is why the clip is travelling beyond film circles: every festival season brings the same policing, and a star refusing to apologise gives the pushback a face. Kareena’s “baddie” line helps too — it reframes defiance as fun rather than fury, helping the message reach the young viewers it is really for.
