OTT Releases Today: Gajab Raat on Netflix, Chaar Yaar on Prime Video, Sumo Didi and Hanuman Season 7
Four new Indian titles stream today, October 23 — a Delhi thriller, a crime drama, a sports biopic and mythological animation, across four platforms.
Gajab Raat (Netflix): The headline release. Manoj Bajpayee stars as a morally grey Delhi police officer in a single-night crime thriller — the directorial debut of acclaimed screenwriter Ritesh Shah, produced by Neeraj Pandey. It opens with an injured young woman thrown from a car near Connaught Place; one decision by Bajpayee’s officer then triggers a chain reaction across interconnected characters. The cast includes Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Divya Dutta and Akshay Oberoi. The film arrives with heavy baggage: originally titled Ghooskhor Pandat, its teaser sparked a massive row over the allegedly casteist title — FIRs were registered, the NHRC issued a notice, and the matter reached the Supreme Court, where the makers assured the court the title would be changed.
Chaar Yaar (Prime Video): An eight-episode Hindi crime drama set in early-2000s Mumbai. Four middle-class friends — Jay, Tony, Saahil and Sameer (Purav Jha, Naman Jain, Saqib Ayyub, Prayrak Mehta) — turn to luxury-car theft to escape financial hardship, only to be pulled into a world of gangsters and a determined investigator. Sai Tamhankar, Sikandar Kher and Chunky Panday co-star; Vinay Waikul directs, developed by BBC Studios India.
Sumo Didi (ZEE5 Global): The true story of Hetal Dave, India’s first professional female sumo wrestler. Shriyam Bhagnani plays Dave in this 118-minute sports drama directed by Jayant Rohatgi — her fight against body-shaming and gender stereotypes from Kolkata to Japan. It premiered at the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2023.
The Legend of Hanuman Season 7 (JioHotstar): The animated series returns with the Lanka conflict nearing its decisive stage — Hanuman takes on a mission involving a powerful weapon while the story probes Lord Rama’s past. Damandeep Singh Baggan voices Hanuman; Sharad Kelkar returns as Ravana.
Filmverse take: Gajab Raat is the one to watch most closely — not just as a film, but as a case study. The Ghooskhor Pandat row was one of the sharpest title fights Indian streaming has seen, and Netflix plus Pandey chose to rename rather than defend. Audience reception will reveal whether the row was about the title alone. Creatively, the Bajpayee–Pandey reunion carries real weight, and Shah’s jump from celebrated writer to director deserves attention. Our weekend pick: Gajab Raat for thriller fans, Sumo Didi for the family watch.
For context, last week’s OTT slate included Nani’s The Paradise arriving on Netflix:
