Mirzapur: The Movie Crosses Rs 270 Crore as Ritesh Sidhwani’s OTT-to-Theatre Gamble Pays Off
When Ritesh Sidhwani announced that Mirzapur — one of India’s most beloved streaming series — would move from small screens to cinemas as a full-scale feature film, the trade called it a high-stakes gamble. No Indian producer had dared to take that path before.
Six weeks on, the gamble has paid off spectacularly. According to trade trackers, Mirzapur: The Movie crossed Rs 270 crore in India (trade estimate) on Day 41, adding Rs 2.73 lakh on October 14 alone from 81 shows across 31 cities.
The film’s week-wise run tells the story of a true blockbuster: a Rs 174.97 crore opening week, a Rs 64.02 crore second week, and steady business since, with Day 3 remaining its biggest single day at Rs 43.03 crore. The Excel Entertainment production has sold over 10.29 million tickets at an average ticket price of Rs 262.
Sidhwani, who debuted with the culture-defining Dil Chahta Hai and later shaped Indian streaming with Inside Edge and Made in Heaven, has now opened a whole new playbook — proof that when sharp business acumen meets passion for cinema, even the biggest risks can become history.
