Mookuthi Amman 2 Review Roundup: Critics Call Nayanthara Film a ‘God-Sized Disappointment’ as Box Office Stalls

Critics have spoken on Mookuthi Amman 2, and the verdict is brutal. Nayanthara’s Diwali sequel has drawn some of the harshest reviews of the year — and the box office is following the critics.

Cinema Express calls the film “a systematic desecration of the amman genre”, attacking its sloppy CGI, chaotic scenes and a humour track it calls Sundar C’s most crippled asset. India Today is blunter still, calling it a “god-sized disappointment” and “perhaps one of the weakest Amman films in Tamil cinema”. The Cinema Post agrees, saying Nayanthara shines as the goddess but Sundar C repeats his Aranmanai formula with an outdated screenplay.

There are defenders, but cautious ones. OnlyKollywood gives it 3 out of 5, calling it an entertaining take on the Amman fantasy genre and praising Nayanthara’s screen presence, the colourful presentation and Hiphop Tamizha’s score — while conceding the familiar storyline and uneven portions hold it back. Audiences are split the same way: some praise Nayanthara’s screen presence and the interval block, while others rate it 0.5 out of 5 and call it the worst Tamil film of the year.

The story follows Shakthi, played by Nayanthara, a Chennai policewoman haunted by visions of a village called Mailanji and her past life as Mookuthi Amman, with Regina Cassandra as the antagonist. It is a sharp turn from the 2020 original, RJ Balaji’s political satire that became a streaming hit during Covid; Sundar C rebuilds it as a full-scale devotional action drama with period war sequences — which Cinema Express notes borrow shot-for-shot from Avengers: Infinity War and 300.

The contrast with the original is the problem. The 2020 film worked because its goddess was a vehicle for satire; this one asks the audience to take the spectacle straight, and the writing, by most accounts, cannot carry it. Nayanthara, in her fifth release of the year, remains the film’s biggest draw — even the harshest reviews credit her screen presence — but a star cannot rescue a film whose comedy falls flat and whose effects look cheap. The box office tells the same story: Rs 1.88 crore net on Day 1 and only around Rs 53 lakh on Day 2 so far — roughly Rs 2.41 crore in two days, dwarfed by Scene’s Rs 30 crore in the same Diwali clash.
