Balu Varghese Served Legal Notice Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct; Three More Women Reportedly Come Forward

Malayalam actor Balu Varghese has been served a legal notice by a woman over alleged sexual misconduct during a private gathering, according to a report by The News Minute, carried by Cinema Express. The notice demands a written apology from the actor and a formal undertaking that such behaviour will not be repeated.

The legal notice characterises the actor’s alleged actions as a severe violation of personal security, privacy, dignity and bodily autonomy. In unusually direct language, it states: “Unwelcome physical contact of the nature complained of cannot be justified by familiarity, friendship, participation in a game, the location of the gathering or any purported misunderstanding.” The complainant has said the incident left her feeling not only profoundly disturbed but enraged.

In a significant development, three more women within the same circle of film personalities and linked through mutual acquaintances have reportedly come forward with similar accusations, claiming that Balu had previously misbehaved with them as well. A Mathrubhumi report dated October 22 similarly stated that the woman sought a written apology from the actor along with an assurance that such behaviour would not be repeated.

The story broke into the public domain after composer Sushin Shyam — who composed the music for Balu’s blockbuster Manjummel Boys — shared the initial report on his Instagram Stories, sparking speculation about the woman being one of his associates. Balu Varghese, who has featured in more than 40 films including major successes such as Jan.E.Man and Manjummel Boys, is yet to respond to the allegations. The identities of the women involved remain undisclosed, with the complaints made on conditions of anonymity.

Filmverse take: The wording of this legal notice is what makes it different from the usual celebrity controversy cycle — it pre-emptively closes off every standard defence (“it was just friendly”, “it was a misunderstanding”) in a single paragraph, which suggests the complainant’s legal team expects this to be fought hard. Malayalam cinema has a long, unresolved history with such allegations, from the Hema Committee revelations to cases that stalled at the complaint stage. Whether this notice becomes a police case or ends in a quiet settlement will say more about the industry’s accountability machinery than about any single actor. For now, Balu’s silence is the loudest part of the story — and the fact that three more women have reportedly spoken up means this will not fade with the weekend news cycle.
