Ranabaali Closing Business: Vijay Deverakonda Film Declared a Hit as Total Business Touches Rs 162 Crore
Ranabaali has closed its theatrical run as a commercial success. According to Telugu Cinema, Vijay Deverakonda’s period action drama generated a worldwide theatrical gross estimated at Rs 82 crore, while its non-theatrical rights fetched another Rs 80 crore — taking the film’s overall business to around Rs 162 crore.
The non-theatrical split explains the verdict. Netflix paid Rs 50 crore for the OTT rights, a deal closed nearly a year and a half ago, when streaming rights were booming. Music rights went to T-Series for Rs 8 crore, and satellite rights brought in Rs 9 crore for Hindi, Rs 8 crore for Telugu and Rs 5 crore for other languages — Rs 80 crore in total before a single ticket was sold.
Theatrically, the picture is more mixed. The film recovered its theatrical investment in the Telugu states, but its North American theatrical run ended with losses. Sacnilk’s tracker puts the worldwide gross at Rs 80.60 crore after 22 days, with Day 22 itself adding just Rs 1 lakh — the run is effectively over. Producer Mythri Ravi has declared the film a hit at a recent movie event, and on total business the claim holds: a film that grossed around Rs 82 crore in theatres and banked Rs 80 crore elsewhere is a success, even if the theatrical leg alone would not have carried it.
That is the honest shape of this result. Ranabaali opened on October 16 to negative early reviews and mixed word of mouth, and our Day 8 report had it at Rs 43 crore worldwide. What sustained it was not critical praise but audience connect and Vijay Deverakonda’s commanding screen presence, which kept the film alive through three weeks while bigger releases came and went. The Netflix deal, struck at the peak of the OTT boom, did the heavy lifting — Rs 50 crore for streaming rights is more than half the non-theatrical total, and it is the single biggest reason the film’s final maths works.
The success also resets expectations for Vijay Deverakonda’s next film, Rowdy Janardhana, which Telugu Cinema names as his upcoming project. A star whose film survives bad reviews and still closes at Rs 162 crore of total business carries real commercial credibility into his next release. Ranabaali streams on Netflix from November 13.
