Priyanka Chopra Exits Saif Ali Khan and Ritesh Batra’s Period Drama as Mumbai Shoot Begins; Makers Race to Recast
Saif Ali Khan’s period drama with director Ritesh Batra began shooting in Mumbai on October 21 — but without its leading lady. Priyanka Chopra, who was set to star opposite Saif in what would have been the two actors’ first on-screen pairing, has exited the untitled film before she could join the Mumbai schedule, with her existing professional commitments creating a scheduling conflict the team could not resolve.
The film kicked off at a museum in Byculla, and production is continuing with Saif’s portions as the makers move quickly to lock a new female lead. The shoot is planned as a start-to-finish schedule across different parts of South Mumbai, with the team focused on keeping production on course while the recasting is finalised.
The project remains one of the more intriguing Hindi film collaborations currently in motion. It marks Saif’s first outing with Batra, the director who won global acclaim with The Lunchbox in 2013 and followed it with The Sense of an Ending and Our Souls at Night in 2017, and Photograph in 2019 — a body of work defined by quiet emotional precision. The development comes amid a busy phase for Saif: in 2026 he drew attention as a morally conflicted police officer in Pulkit’s Netflix crime drama Kartavya, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, and appeared alongside Akshay Kumar in Priyadarshan’s theatrical action thriller Haiwaan.
Here is the Filmverse take: a lead exiting before cameras roll is the least damaging kind of casting shake-up — no reshoots, no shelved footage, no money burned. But the optics are brutal all the same. The story Filmverse reported when the shoot began was “Saif’s exciting new collaboration with the director of The Lunchbox”; overnight it has become “who replaces Priyanka Chopra.” The silver lining is that Batra’s cinema has never depended on star wattage — The Lunchbox made Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui feel like the only possible cast because the writing demanded it, not because the names sold it. If anything, a less predictable casting choice fits his sensibility better than a global marquee name. Still, the trade will read this as a test of how badly the film’s backers wanted the Chopra premium — and the speed of the replacement announcement will tell us everything about how this production sees itself.
Further details on the recasting are expected as the Mumbai schedule progresses.
