Shaitaan Movie Review: Engaging and Entertaining Throughout

SHAITAAN is a movie that revolves around the story of Kabir and his family who encounter a mysterious man named Vanraj during a weekend at their farmhouse. Vanraj befriends the family and casts a spell on Kabir’s daughter Janvi. Despite the family’s suspicion, Vanraj manipulates his way into staying with them. As Vanraj reveals his demand to take Janvi with him, the family faces a terrifying situation that unfolds throughout the rest of the film.

SHAITAAN is a mesmerizing remake of the 2023 Gujarati film “VASH”, written and directed by Krishnadev Yagnik. This film stands out from others centered around black magic, with an exceptional storyline. Aamil Keeyan Khan’s adapted screenplay is captivating and impressively crafted, despite the overused genre and predominantly single-setting mansion.

The dialogues are straightforward, and the carefully chosen one-liners pack a punch. Vikas Bahl’s direction is top-notch, captivating the viewers throughout, particularly when the situation worsens. The family’s situation is genuinely touching, making it hard not to root for them. The film maintains a consistent level of tension, captivating the audience effectively. Despite some liberties, the movie is an absolute treat. It is overwhelming to witness characters enduring severe injuries and still manage to survive and retaliate. The final battle appears to be foreseeable, but the sheer brilliance of the execution leaves you surprised. The final scene is intriguing, although it could have been improved through better writing.

Starting with a creepy credit animation that establishes the atmosphere, “SHAITAAN” grabs your attention right from the beginning. The opening shot is beautiful, setting a natural tone. Chaos ensues as Vanraj innocently introduces himself to the family. Two standout scenes in the first half include Janvi playing energetically with her brother on the swing, and the police sequence, which leaves you on the edge of your seat. This intermission arrives at a critical moment. The second half sees the madness escalating as Vanraj steps up his tactics, while the family attempts to outwit him. The final episode is gripping, despite its flaws.

R Madhavan absolutely owns the screen with a riveting performance in “SHAITAAN”. His portrayal is packed with a beguiling innocence that thoroughly convinces the audience, making the unfolding drama all the more gripping. As the plot thickens, Madhavan’s character becomes an enthralling watch.

Janki Bodiwala delivers an equally stellar performance, embodying her role with a precision that leaves viewers spellbound. Her portrayal is seamless and adds considerable depth to the film.

Ajay Devgn, never one to be outdone, showcases his formidable talent, guaranteeing a rousing response from the audience, especially during the film’s climactic moments. His presence is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft.

Jyotika and Anngad Raaj offer strong performances, bringing their characters to life with authenticity and a touch of wit where needed. Each actor contributes to a cinematic experience that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant.

Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti’s cinematography transcends mere visual storytelling; it’s an artful masterpiece confined within the walls of a singular home. His lens breathes life into each frame, with the swing sequence standing as a testament to his sheer brilliance. Garima Mathur’s production design takes us on a visual feast, each detail meticulously crafted to perfection. Radhika Mehra’s costume designs are nothing short of regal splendor, wrapping the characters in both elegance and authenticity. The action choreography by Vikram Mor and R P Yadav, though harrowing, strikes the perfect chord for the narrative’s intense moments. Sandeep Francis’s editing weaves the myriad elements together with finesse, although a tighter grip could amplify the second act’s gripping pace.

SHAITAAN emerges as a riveting thriller teeming with exceptional performances and an applause-worthy climax that captivates throughout. With its gripping trailer and buzz, along with the added boost from the partial holiday for Mahashivratri, it’s poised for an impressive debut at the box office. Moreover, the excitement is heightened by the fact that an A-list star like Ajay Devgn returns to this genre after a significant hiatus, promising viewers a memorable cinematic experience.
